FFP masks (particle filtering half masks) come in three levels of protection: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. FFP3 masks offer the highest level of protection. They filter 99 per cent of particulate matter from the air, providing high levels of protection against hazardous materials like radioactive dust, heavy metals and pathogens. However, their excellent filtration ability means they can sometimes make it more difficult to breathe. Adding a valve to the mask can make it more comfortable for the wearer by opening only when they exhale while remaining sealed when they inhale. As a result, the wearer experiences less resistance to their breathing, and this prevents the inside of the mask from becoming too warm and moist.
FFP3 masks with exhalation valves: applications and features
FFP3 masks with an exhalation valve are ideal as personal protective equipment (PPE) for many professions involving regular contact with hazardous substances. The determining factor here is the type of hazardous substance and its concentration. FFP3 masks are permitted for use with concentrations of hazardous substances up to 30 times the occupational exposure limit value (OELV). Typical applications include welding, asbestos removal and handling hazardous radioactive substances. In public health, FFP3 masks are used when treating highly infectious patients. Please note: The air exhaled through the valve is not filtered. FFP3 masks with an exhalation valve are therefore only suited to situations where the wearer is in need of protection! They do not provide any protection for the area around the wearer, and pathogens like viruses and bacteria can pass unfiltered through the valve into the air.

As personal protective equipment (PPE), FFP3 masks are subject to the EU Directive on PPE (2016/425) and must meet precise legal requirements. As such, please ensure you can verify compliance with the legal standards when buying masks. Our protective masks are all DIN EN 149 certified and bear the CE label.
